Privacy Policy
Last updated: October 22, 2026
Prose is a Chrome extension that coaches your writing inside Google Docs. This policy explains exactly what data Prose touches, what leaves your computer, how long anything is kept, and how to get rid of it.
- The text you ask for feedback on is sent to our server and on to Anthropic's Claude API to generate the response. It is never stored, never logged, and never used to train any AI model.
- Prose does not use a Google sign-in, does not hold a Google account token, and cannot see any file other than the document you have open.
- We never learn your name, your email address, or which Google account you use, unless you email us or join our waitlist.
How Prose reads your document
Prose does not use Google sign-in (OAuth) and does not request any Google API permission. It holds no Google account token and has no access to your Drive.
Instead, when you open a document, Prose runs inside that Google Docs page and downloads the plain-text version of that one document using the browser session you are already signed in with. It is the same request your browser makes when you choose File → Download → Plain text, and it works only for a document you can already open yourself. Google performs the permission check, exactly as it would for you.
This means Prose can read the document you have open and nothing else. It cannot list your files, open a different document, or reach anything in your Drive. Prose also never writes to your document: when you accept a suggestion, Prose copies the replacement text to your clipboard and you paste it yourself.
If Prose cannot read a document, it offers a box to paste your text in instead. Pasted text is handled exactly like text read from the document and is not stored.
What leaves your device
- The text you ask for feedback on. When you request an analysis, rewrite, thesis check, rubric check, tone reading, or fact check, the relevant text is sent over HTTPS to our API service, which forwards it to Anthropic's Claude API. It is held in memory only for as long as the request takes. It is not written to disk, not logged, and not retained by us.
- An anonymous install ID. Each installation generates a random identifier (a UUID) so we can apply daily fair-use limits. It is generated on your device, is not derived from anything about you, and is not linked to your name, email, or Google account.
- Your IP address. Seen by our server on every request, as it is by every website. We use it only to count requests per network per day, so one network cannot exhaust the service.
- Your license key, if you have one. Sent when you activate Pro and when it is periodically revalidated.
- Your email address, only if you choose to give it. If you join the waitlist on this website, we store the address you type. Nothing in the extension sends us your email.
What we store, and for how long
| Data | Where | Kept for |
| Text you submit for feedback | Not stored. In memory for the duration of the request | Discarded when the request finishes |
| Daily request counts per install ID | Cloudflare KV | Deletes itself after 2 days |
| Daily request counts per IP address | Cloudflare KV | Deletes itself after 2 days |
| Service-wide daily totals (no identifiers) | Cloudflare KV | Deletes itself after 2 days |
| License key, its activation status, and the install IDs it is active on | Cloudflare KV | Until you ask us to delete it, or the license ends |
| Waitlist email address | Cloudflare KV | Until you ask us to remove it |
| Writer profile, settings, and accepted-suggestion history | Your browser only. Never sent to us | Until you delete it or uninstall |
We keep no request logs containing your writing, and we run no analytics or tracking of any kind. There is no third-party analytics, advertising, or error-reporting code in the extension or on this website.
How your data is protected
- Encrypted in transit. Every request between the extension, our API, and Anthropic travels over HTTPS (TLS). Prose makes no unencrypted requests.
- Your writing is never at rest on our systems. Document text is forwarded and discarded. There is no database of essays, no backup of them, and no log that contains them.
- Minimised by design. What we can store is limited to the short list above: a random ID, request counts, a license key, and a waitlist email. We hold no names, no passwords, no Google account identifiers, and no payment details.
- Credentials are kept server-side. Our AI provider key is stored as an encrypted secret on Cloudflare and is never included in the extension, so it cannot be extracted from your browser.
- Narrow permissions. The extension requests one Chrome permission,
storage, and can only run on Google Docs document pages and this website's activation page. It cannot see any other site you visit.
- Restricted access. Administrative access to the service is limited to the developer's own accounts.
What stays on your device
This data lives in your browser's local extension storage and is never transmitted to us.
- Writer profile. The date, score, tone words, and writing-habit patterns from past analyses. It contains no essay text. You can remove individual entries or wipe it entirely in Settings → Writing History.
- Accepted suggestions. When you copy a suggested rewrite, Prose remembers the snippet so it does not suggest the same change twice. These are short excerpts of suggested text, kept per document, most recent 25 only.
- Recent scores. The last score for each document you have analysed.
- Settings and goals. Word targets, goals, coaching level, accent colour, and preferences.
- Pro status. Whether your license is active on this device.
Uninstalling Prose deletes all of it.
AI models, and our Limited Use commitment
Prose generates feedback using Anthropic's Claude models through Anthropic's API. Your text is processed under Anthropic's privacy policy. Anthropic does not use data submitted through its API to train its models.
We do not use your writing, or anything derived from it, to create, train, improve, or fine-tune any AI or machine-learning model, whether our own or anyone else's. We do not sell it, and we do not transfer it to anyone other than the AI provider that generates your feedback.
Prose reads your document through an ordinary signed-in browser download rather than a Google Workspace API. Regardless of how Google user data reaches us, we make this commitment: the use of raw or derived user data received from Google APIs will adhere to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
Who else processes your data
- Anthropic generates the feedback from the text you submit.
- Cloudflare hosts our API and the storage used for rate limits and license status, and serves this website.
- Our payment processor handles any Pro purchase. Payment happens entirely on their systems and we never see your card details.
We use no other third parties, and we do not share your data with advertisers or data brokers.
What we never do
- We don't sell or share your data with advertisers or data brokers.
- We don't store your essays, or keep logs that contain them.
- We don't train AI models on your writing.
- We don't track your browsing. Prose only runs on Google Docs document pages.
- We don't edit your document, and we can't see any other file in your Drive.
- We don't show ads.
Deleting your data
- On your device. Delete entries in Settings → Writing History, or uninstall Prose to remove everything it has stored locally.
- Request counts. These expire automatically within 2 days. No action is needed.
- License records. Email us from any address with your license key and we will delete the record and its device list. Because the install ID is random and tied to nothing about you, a license key is the only way we can identify your records.
- Waitlist. Email us and we will remove your address.
We will action any deletion request within 30 days.
Children's privacy
Prose is intended for students aged 13 and up. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has given us personal information, email us and we will delete it.
Changes & contact
We'll update this page when the policy changes, and change the date at the top. Questions, deletion requests, or anything else: cyrus.hohman@icloud.com.
